General Guidelines for Keeping Your Home Cool and Efficient
Have a certified HVAC professional inspect your home’s ductwork and cooling equipment.
Clean or replace your air conditioner filters every three months.
Clean your chimney and ensure your fireplace is functioning properly.
Clear out rain gutters and storm drains to prevent water buildup.
Vacuum and clean vents, baseboard heaters, and air ducts regularly.
Seal air leaks in the attic, basement, crawlspace, and around windows and doors.
Check attic insulation levels. (The U.S. Department of Energy recommends insulation rated between R-22 and R-49.)
Keep blinds or curtains closed on the sunny side of the house—especially during peak afternoon hours.
Extra Steps You Can Take to Save Energy
Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures throughout the day.
Upgrade to double-pane windows to help reflect sunlight and reduce energy loss.
Apply a reflective coating to your roof, or use light-colored shingles when replacing it.
Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) or LEDs.
Install awnings or plant shade trees to help block direct sunlight and keep your home cooler.
Tips to Improve Air Quality and Reduce Health Risks
When you adjust your clocks (spring/fall), also change the batteries in smoke alarms, radon detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors.
Consider installing a whole-home ventilation system to improve air circulation and bring in fresh air.
Clean or replace any materials affected by water damage, especially carpets and upholstery.
Maintain a clean living space to minimize allergens like dust and mold.
Use caution when operating fuel-burning appliances to prevent carbon monoxide or gas leaks.
Store and dispose of household chemicals safely to avoid exposure to harmful substances.
